Frederick: It’s official. It. Is. Hot. June has ushered in thicker air and dreams of diving into a refreshing pool. With the official start of summer looming, it is easy to want to slip into vacation mode. However, summer is also the perfect time to handle some home maintenance that may have gone unattended to during the colder months.
Change the Air Filters
Your air conditioning is now fired up and working hard. You don’t want to pump dirty, dusty air into your home. A fresh new filter will mean your system will work more efficiently and hopefully will impact your bill a little less.
Check Your Smoke Detectors
Although anytime of year is good for this, it’s likely that you are going out of town or hosting guests during the summer months. Making sure your family is safe–and your fun won’t be interrupted by that incessant beeping from bad batteries–is well worth the few minutes it takes to check to be sure your smoke detectors are in working order.
Change the Oil in your Lawnmower
Most homeowners whip out their lawnmowers as the grass starts to grow in the spring but it’s easy to forget to do routine maintenance. Changing the oil will prolong the life of your lawn mower and make sure that you aren’t stuck buying a new one or braving the jungle your lawn will quickly become.
Stain your Deck or Fence
Spending more time outdoors means you will likely take notice of what your backyard space needs. Staining during summer months is ideal because the days are longer for a more intensive project plus stain will cure faster in the summer heat.
Fertilize the Yard
Summer is the time to lay down fertilizer that will prevent weeds from growing or kill the weeds that your spring fertilizer didn’t prevent. This will keep your grass looking healthier. When kids and pets run around, you want to make sure they are safe. Plan for a time when you can lay down fertilizer and be gone a bit so they aren’t immediately exposed to the chemicals–plan to stay off the lawn for about 24 hours. However, once it’s done and you have a nice soft place to land, you’ll be glad you did it!
Summer is the time for backyard BBQs and firing up the sprinkler to make childhood memories. Check off some simple home maintenance to make sure you have a relaxing few months ahead!
